"The desert is a weird place at night. Although there are wide stretches of soft sand, blown into long rolling dunes by the wind, much of your route lies over bare stretches of rock. You are able to make good time over the flatter stretches, but upflung crags often cause you to make a detour, and it is these outcrops which the wind and sand have eroded into unearthly shapes. Now the wind blowing around them produces the sounds which give the place its name."
