Turanga Leela

- welcome to the world of tomorrow!

A tall, athletic woman with purple hair, a white singlet, grey leggings and big boots stands in front of a round porthole through which can be seen stars. She has one large eye in the centre of her forehead.

"This is my first visit to the Galaxy of Terror, and I would like it to be a pleasant one!"

Matt Groening's follow-up to the wildly successful 'Simpsons' was an anarchic romp through science fiction called 'Futurama'. Futurama, set in the next millennium, follows the exploits of Fry, a pizza delivery boy who was cryogenically frozen by accident for 1,000 years. His fellow cast members include Bender, a foul-mouthed, hard-drinking, cigar-smoking, larcenous robot, Dr. Zoidberg, a catastrophically under-qualified doctor (and talking lobster), sweet-natured rich-kid and physics intern Amy Wong (of the Martian Wongs), mad scientist and Fry's great, great, great..nephew, Professor Farnsworth, and the beautiful, cyclopeian Turanga Leela (voted 'least mutated mutant'), captain of the Planet Express ship.

With this, I wanted to try and create the 'reality' behind the cartoon. Of course, Leela has only ever existed as her toon self, but I thought it would be fun to see what the real person the toon might have been based on would look like! The cartoon version is shown here so you can see how close I managed to get.

If you would like to see this picture in more detail, this image links to a larger version. The larger version is 86 k in size.
