"Fry, wouldn't it be easier to just apologise to the Horrible Gelatinous Blob for spilling his drink so we can leave?"
This picture was the result of my watching my favourite cartoon, Futurama (created by Matt Groening, creator of 'The Simpsons'), and idly wondering what the 'real' characters might look like if the cartoon versions were actually 'based on real people'. Or if someone was ever inspired enough to make 'Futurama - The Movie'! Here we see the beautiful and big-booted Turanga Leela and the series 'hero' Fry in a (literally) sticky situation with the Horrible Gelatinous Blob. It was a tricky decision how 'dorky' to make Fry - on the one hand he is portrayed in the cartoon as pretty dim, but on the other hand he does have a (well-hidden) heroic aspect to his character at times. And he and Leela do have this kind of on-off thing going on...
Bender the robot makes a small cameo appearance in the graffiti on one of the walls. (By the way, the other alien graffiti actually does make sense if you know the alphabet - when I posted this picture on a web-forum, someone actually took the trouble to work it all out. I'm not entirely sure who's sadder, them or me for taking the time to write meaningful phrases in the first place!)
I think the 'non-toon' versions of the characters work pretty well and are believably realistic while still retaining a strong resemblance to their cartoon counterparts. The first comment posted to the above-mentioned forum was 'Man, Leela is HOT!', so I must have got something right! It still leaves me wondering who would play the roles in the live-action movie...
