Caeci 'doll'

This came about as a result of a friend of mine seeing some of the sketches I'd done of Caeci and the elfen and saying that they would make great toys. I was taken with the idea of creating Caeci in three dimesions, and at a reasonably large scale - originally, I wanted to make her life-size at about 4'6" tall, but better sense prevailed! This doll is just under 3' tall.

I researched some doll making techniques for this. She is basically a'rag-doll', though slightly more complicated in construction. Her body and limbs are made from fur-fabric with felt inserts for elbows and knees and felt hands and feet. Her head is constructed from fur-fabric panels and her face is felt. The features are made by soaking the felt (in wallpaper paste in this case!) until it is malleable, stretching it over a sculpted form while it dries, and then sewing it into the other panels of the head. The eyes are inserted before this latter stage. The doll is stuffed quite tightly with kapok, providing enough rigidity to enable her to stand.

Her clothing and accessories are all made by hand from scraps and off-cuts of leatherette, fur-fabric and cotton, with braiding and other detailing sewn on afterwards. Her chain-mail shirt was knitted from string (thanks Mum!), sprayed with metallic car-paint and hammered flat (the same way full-scale stage chainmail is often constructed). The accessories are either found objects or made from various materials like balsa wood

I made a set of templates for the various components of the basic body and head, and ended up making a few of these models in a variety of guises (incuding some Trekkie ones!)
