Griffin Island was an expansion campaign rulebook for the RPG 'Runequest', set in the ancient world of Glorantha and published by Avalon Hill (Games Workshop in the UK). Runequest was notable for its Bronze Age setting and its unique and impressive created mythology. It also allowed the creation of some truly eccentric characters and settings.
Several illustrators worked on the book. My particular task was to picture the various characters that inhabited the island. It's often difficult to visualise characters from the brief descriptions the publishers give you (often before the full text of the book is finalised), as you're working without a context for them. In this case, only one character went awry - the mysterious evil magician in the all-enveloping cloak, who was merely described as 'small and possibly deformed' in the description I was given, in fact turned out to be a duck! Mmmm, knowing that might have helped beforehand...
