A Respectable Family by Maxim Gorky - Shishkin

- Bristol Revunions at the Edinburgh Festival. Directed by Andy Jordan.

My first trip to the Edinburgh Festival, in this production of a recently unearthed first play by Maxin Gorky. The cast of this 1977 production was drawn from the BOVTS and Bristol University, so it was a chance to work with some new people.

The play, heavily influenced by Chekov's 'Uncle Vanya' is a compassionate but unsentimental study of a provincial Russian family, less humane than Chekov, but rich and bursting with vibrant, pathetic, absurd, wistful, optimistic people. All very Russian.

I only had a small part but I enjoyed the experience. Several actors who were to go on to greater things made their early debuts in this production too, including Nick Farrell, Julia Hills and David Bamber.
