There are some tongue in cheek 'publicity' photos that we took for this production below. These were intended to recall the classic Hammer films in their look. Selecting any of the small thumbnail images will show a larger version of the picture in the main part of the page. »
Ken Hill's version of the classic vampire tale doesn't take itself at all seriously and lends itself brilliantly to the 'anarchic romp' school of production. The two students on the BOVTS's directing course had to choose a play to direct and produce in front of the school as part of their coursework. One of the students - whose name escapes me - produced some horribly po-faced and serious piece of Strindberg or something. Chris James bravely chose to do Dracula, with a cast of thousands, and achieved a hugely funny and successful triumph of skill and enthusiasm over budget! The play was performed in the main studio at the BOVTS to vast acclaim from the rest of the students. I played the guy himself (I was eventually to play all the main male parts in Dracula with the exception of Van Helsing at some time or another and Dracula himself on three occasions) and took it very seriously(!) even dying my hair black for the role.
