Sassy's page

- my much-loved feline companion

Sassy arrived suddenly in our street as a dusty and rather bedraggled stray. Even in this condition, though, she was a beautiful cat with perfect tortie markings and huge amber eyes, very friendly and trusting. My then housemate and I fed her occasionally, but after she was (we think) knocked down by a car we took her to the vet to be checked over. No real injuries other than bruising were found, but we decided to take her in for a couple of weeks until she was fully recovered... At the time of writing, she's been my adored companion for ten years and counting!

Since entering the house she has become totally a part of my family and is a wonderful and loving companion. Unlike many cats, she is genuinely affectionate and very loyal, coming out to meet me when I return from work, greeting me every morning with a wake-up nose-nibble(!), and spending most evenings curled up on my lap on the sofa. She does 'give good cat' and I miss her hugely when work takes me away from home for any extended period and she has to go and stay with her vets.

A little while ago, she lost an eye as the result of an old injury/infection, but she adapted very well and, aside from occassionally misjudging a leap onto the sofa and having to resort to undignified scrabbling, she was soon back to her old self. She has recently been diagnosed with chronic renal failure - very common in elderly cats - but thanks to a specialised diet to ease the strain on her remaining kidney functioning and making sure that she has plenty of water available to drink, I'm hoping that we can keep her going a little while longer, as long as she still semms to be enjoying life. She also has a hyper-active thyroid (controlled with a daily tablet), and a slight heart murmur. She is showing the first signs of arthritis in her hips, and is sometimes a bit wobbly when she gets up from lying down. She's also almost totally deaf. Poor old soul!

Recently she gave me a huge scare when she became very poorly and I thought that I would lose her. She had a very bad infection in her digestive system and for a while it was touch and go. There was one dreadful day when I took her to the vet not at all sure that I would be bringing her home. However, due to her wonderful vet, she has now recovered almost completely and is back to her old happy and adorable self. I still have to keep an eye on her general health, but she seems quite well, all things considered.

I'm not sure how old she is now, but she seems to vary wildly between sedate and dignified old age and bouts of ludicrously kittenish bouncing and dashing. Other hobbies include: dustbin raiding, spider stalking, sunbeam hunting, throwing up (only on to cream rugs, of course), and being a total floozie to passers-by outside the house.
